Rapid Fire Book Tag

I was tagged for the Rapid Fire Book Tag by Amy @ Tomes with Tea, I highly recommend giving her blog a look

1. eBook or physical books?
Physical books are just about the whole experience. The feel of a book in your hands, the smell, the snuggle-ability. I tend to read ebooks when travelling, because of bag space, but I miss the ‘real’ books at the time

2. Paperback or hardback?
Paperback. I get annoyed by dust covers on hardbacks, and the weight can be annoying, I only tend to buy them if I can’t wait for the paperback.

3. Online or in-store book shopping?
In-store, that’s why I tend to not buy things from my wishlist, because I go into a shop to browse and come out with books I’ve never seen before. I love just looking at all the books, reading the blurbs, looking at the covers and feeling the books. I have to be strict though so I don’t buy everything I see!

4. Trilogies or series?
I tend to read more stand-alone books. I’m not sure I can answer this one actually because it really depends on the books and what is going to happen.

5. Heroes or villains?
Villains tend to be more interesting to read about. That’s why Chamber and Half-blood Prince are my favourite Potter books, the Voldy back story.

6. A book you want everyone to read?
‘Yes Means Yes’ which is about rape culture and consent. I just think it’s really important. I have a review here and several other related posts

7. Recommend an underrated book?
It’s been a while since I’ve pimped these but Scott Stabile’s ‘Brooklyn Bites’ series. They’re short stories which are built around food, the descriptions especially are really amazing. Reviews here, here, and here

8. The last book you finished?

‘War’ by Roald Dahl. My first adult Dahl

9. The last book you bought?

I think when I bought ‘Autumn’ for book club, and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ just because.

Oh no, I bought ‘The Book of Dust’ after that…does that mean I buy too many books because I forgot about a trip to the book shop?

10. Weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark?
Err…another book?

11. Used books: yes or no?
I tend to buy new, but I’m happy enough with used books so long as they aren’t a complete mess.

12. Three favourite genres?
Contemporary. Historical. Feminist.

13. Borrow or buy?
I really should borrow more, but part of the joy of books is the beauty of a full bookcase

14. Characters or plot?
Plot I guess, although some characters can ruin a plot. I don’t mind unlikeable character so long as they aren’t annoying (Bella Swan for example is just the most annoying and unlikeable character…but then I’m not a Twilight fan)

15. Long or short books?
Depends. Sometimes short books are too short, but if done well they can be beautiful, whereas sometimes a long book can be a bit of a mission. I guess it’s the quality of the story and writing which really matters.

16. Long or short chapters?
Again probably depends on the book, but in general short because it makes it easier to stop if you need to,

17. Name the first 3 books you think of.

His Dark Materials. Harry Potter. Life After Life

18. Books that made you laugh or cry?
Laugh – Let’s Pretend this Never Happened. How To Be a Woman. Texts From Jane Eyre
Cry – Harry Potter- especially Deathly Hallows. The Time Traveller’s Wife. The Book Thief. Still Alice.

19. Our world or fictional worlds?
Fictional. It’s a real escape, and if one is too much you can just go to another. Plus there’s enough rubbish in this world that escapism is sometimes necessary.

20. Audiobooks; yes or no?

No, I find I can’t concentrate on them, although I was considering listening whilst doing house work.

21. Do you ever judge a book by it’s cover?
Yes and no. You can usually broadly tell what type of book a book is from the cover, so I do that far, but it’s the blurb which really makes me decide

22. Book to movie or TV adaptations?
Probably TV because less tends to be cut, but I don’t really have a preference.

23. Movie/TV show you preferred to its book?
Lord of the Rings. I’ve never managed to finish the book, but I love the films.

24. Series or standalone’s?
I tend to read stand alones, but some of my favourite books are series. Harry Potter. His Dark Materials. The Thursday Next books. I suppose like Amy I think it depends on the book.

I tag Holly @ Nut Free Nerd and Feminism in Cold Storage if they fancy it, and anyone else who would like to do it

Literary Giveaway Hop 8-12th February

I always love The Literary Blog Hop, hosted by Judith @ Leeswammes

The idea behind the hop is to giveaway a literary book, so no YA or chick-lit here.

As this one falls over my birthday I’m going to do what I did last year, and make a list of books to choose from which I have read, and loved, published each year from the year I was born (1987) to last year. The winner can pick any book from this list. Where possible I have linked to reviews of these books (in bold), if I haven’t reviewed them then I link to amazon.

You don’t have to follow me to win (although it’s nice if you want to). And anyone can enter so long as The Book Depository ships free to your county. Just fill in the form below the list.

1987- Norwegian Wood- Haruki Murakami

1988- Matilda- Roald Dahl

1989- Like Water For Chocolate- Laura Esquivel

1990- The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts- Louis de Berniéres

1991- The Liar- Stephen Fry

1992- Mostly Harmless- Douglas Adams (or choose another book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series)

1993- The Virgin Suicides- Jeffrey Eugenides

1994- Handle With Care- Jodi Picoult

1995- High Fidelity- Nick Hornby

1996- The Beach- Alex Garland

1997- Penguin Lost- Andrey Kurkov

1998- Big Fish- Daniel Wallace

1999- Waiting- Ha Jin

2000- Q&A (Slumdog Millionaire)- Vikas Swarup

2001- Life of Pi- Yann Martel

2002- Everything is Illuminated- Johnathan Safron Foer

2003- The Time Traveller’s Wife- Audrey Niffeneger

2004- Pop Co.- Scarlett Thomas

2005-  A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian- Marina Lewychka

2006- The Elegance of the Hedgehog- Murial Barbery

2007- The House at Riverton- Kate Morton

2008- Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet- Jamie Ford

2009- Shades of Grey- Jasper Fforde

2010- The Swan Thieves- Elizabeth Kostova

2011- The Lover’s Dictionary- Daniel Levithan

2012- Peaches for Monsieur le Curé- Joanne Harris (or any previous book in the Chocolat series)

2013- Life After Life- Kate Atkinson

Notes: My list was made up by looking at Wikipedia and (occaionally) Goodreads lists of books published within that year. If there are any mistakes blame them!

Literary Giveaway Blog Hop: The Memory Keeper’s Daughter

literarybloghop_novemberIt’s time for the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop again. I love this giveaway hop. A lot of the hops around are centred on YA fiction, so it’s great to see some giveaways of books which are more of the types of books I would like! The Literary Giveaway Blog Hop is hosted by Judith @ Leeswammes’ Blog. It’s one of my favourite blogs so I recommend you go and have a look even if you’re not taking part in the hop.

This time I’m giving away a copy of The Memory Keeper’s Daughter from my own shelves. This giveaway is only open in Europe, sorry.

I’m doing something a bit different this time. Everyone who enters gets one free entry. Then we’re going to play a game for extra entries.

Below are the first lines of five literary novels. For each book you can guess correctly I will add an extra entry. If you’re not entering but would like to play the game then you can leave your answers in comments which I will switch to moderated for the time of the hop.

Fill in your answers on the form below, you’re answers will only be visable to me.

Right her are the quotes, I have blanked out any words which would too easily give out the answer:

1)

“It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen”

2)

“Dr ****** had enjoyed a satisfactory day in which none of his patients had died or got any worse”

3)

“The world begins anew with every birth, my father used to say. He forgot to say, with every death it ends”

4)

“‘Marx has completely changed the way I view the world,’ declared the Paliéres boy this morning, although ordinarily he says nary a word to me”

5)

“When he was thirteen my brother *** got his arm badly broken at the elbow”

Book Blogger Hop

It’s Friday, and the Book Blogger Hop started yesterday. I actually have a chance to sit down and write a post so thought I would join in this week (despite to fact I have a couple of reviews waiting to be written…shhh).

This week’s question suits e quite well as I’ve been in a bit of a rut recently- although I seem to be coming out of it now.

Who is your go-to author when you are in a reading rut?

Well I tend to more go for a style than anything else. Most books I can just read through a rut with, but when I’m really struggling I know if I find an easy read I should be okay. For this reason I tend to only read Chick-Lit when I’m in a reading rut, (generally speaking) the writing style is easy to understand, the stories aren’t too complex (although they can often be rather predictable), you never really have t think when you’re reading chick-lit. I also find that Jodi Picoult rarely fails to draw me in- her books do make me think, but the writing style is easy and there tends to be a great need to know what’s going to happen next. The other thing is my Harry Potter books. I know them pretty much off by heart but they still excite me.

Related Reviews:

Harvesting the Heart- Jodi Picoult

Sing you Home- Jodi Picoult

Handle with Care- Jodi Picoult

House Rules- Jodi Picoult

Songs of the Humpback Whale- Jodi Picoult

Picture Perfect- Jodi Picoult

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

Literary Givaway Hop

This Giveaway is now closed. Thank you to everyone who entered and of course to Judith for hosting.

Hi guys. I’s been a while since I’ve done a giveaway and when I saw that Judith was hosting the literary giveaway blog hop again it seemed the perfect reason to do one.

The giveaway starts today and ends on Wednesday 27th June.

This time around I have 2 prizes up for grabs:

1) Copies of all the Brooklyn Bites series of short stories for you kindle (This one is one of my favourites so far this year. You can see my reviews here- 1, 2, 3)

2) A copy of The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts in paperback (This was my favourite read last year- see my review)

Both giveaways are open internationally (but for the 2nd you need to be in a country to which The Book Depository delivers for free).

To enter just comment saying which prize you would like. You can enter for both if you wish. However if by some strange coincidence the same person is picked for both prizes I will only give them one (they can choose which) just to spread the love a bit wider!

There are around 60 bloggers participating in this hop- why not visit them all?

Armchair BEA: Introductions

I’m a little late for Armchair BEA this year since I’ve been away over the weekend but I don’t think it’s too late to start!

Yesterday was introductions day and I thought it’s probably a pretty important thing to start off with so without further ado….

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you? How long have you been blogging? Why did you get into blogging?

My name’s Lucy, I’m 25 and I live in Birmingham, UK. I’ve had this blog for almost 3 years now although it’s only been in the last couple that I’ve really gotten into the  blogging community. I started off with a review post on The Bookclub Forum but I waanted to expand it to include general musings and news about books so I started this blog, I’ve not looked back since..

2. What are you currently reading, or what is your favourite book you have read so far in 2012?

At the moment I’m reading The Good Angel of Death by Andrey Kurkov on paper, and a review copy of The Whipping Club by Deborah Henry on my kindle. I’m finding The Good Angel of Death a little difficult to get into, despite really enjoying the other Kurkov novels that I have read. I’ve only just started The Whipping Club so I’m not sure on that one yet.

As for my favourite books this year? I’ve really enjoyed Scott Stabile’s Brooklyn Bites series of short stories, and How to Be a Woman gave me a bit of a girl crush of Caitlin Moran
3. Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you.

My older sister gave birth to my first nephew a couple of weeks ago, and I went to see him last weekend. He is absolutely gorgeous.

4. What is your favorite feature on your blog (i.e. author interviews, memes, something specific to your blog)?

I’m quite liking my Children’s Hour feature at the moment, but generally I like writing musings, I would like to write more of hem though!
5. Where do you see your blog in five years?

Oh I really don’t know. I suppose as long as I still enjoy writing it, and people still enjoy reading it I will keep going!
6. Which is your favorite post that you have written that you want everyone to read?

Oh just one? Umm personally I like my musing on series but my post about how a book’s popularity might effect your reading of it has been one of my most popular posts, and I’m quite proud of that!
7. If you could eat dinner with any author or character, who would it be and why?

Hmm I think dinner with Stephen Fry would be very interesting and fun.
8. What literary location would you most like to visit? Why?

You know what I don’t really have any. Or does the libaray from Beauty and The Beast Count?
9. What is your favorite part about the book blogging community? Is there anything that you would like to see change in the coming years?

I like how people support each other. I’ve had a lot of help when I needed it on twitter, some fantastic recommendations  and referrals from fellow bloggers, and sometimes just a nice chat.
10. Have your reading tastes changed since you started blogging? How?

Not by a great deal. I read more indie authors now, mainly because that’s who I get review requests from. I probably read a few more young adult books as well, although it still takes a fantastic review to get me to read a YA novel most of the time.

Literary Giveaway Blog Hop back again

Judith is again running the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop on her blog Leeswammes’ Blog. This time it will take part from the 23rd to the 27th June.

The Literary Blog Hop is different because bloggers only give away books with ‘literary merit’. No romance, no Y.A and no urban fantasy. I like this because often I find giveaways fall into these genres, and they aren’t the genres I tend to read. I guess you can say it’s a breath of fresh air.

I think it’s been a while since I last did a giveaway too so I’m looking forward to this one.

If you want to join in sign-ups are open until 20th June here at Leeswammes’ Blog

It’s (not!) Fridaaaaay

…and that means the Book Blog Hop is here!

And this week’s question is a bit difficult, ’cause I don’t really know the answer

How many books do you own? This can include books in your to-be-read (TBR) pile(s) and books you have already read that are on your keeper shelf.

As far as books I own, I have no idea at all. I recently packed up the books in my room, and that was about 6 boxes, not to mention my other books around the house. My TBR pile in paper books is at about err 20 books and I have I think about 10 on my kindle…possibly a few more. It’s actually quite big for me, I usually at least attempt to stay in single figures…

Note: for some reason this didn’t post properly on Friday…but I thought it had. I apologise for anyone who tried to visit only to find the link didn’t work

The Book Blogger Hop is Back!

Book Blogger Hop

Oh it’s been such a long time hasn’t it? Jennifer @ Crazy for Books has decided to revive the Book Blogger Hop. She missed it and I have to say I did too. The rules are the same as always except now the hop runs from Friday to Thursday rather than just over the weekend, so there’s plenty of time to join in. I only found out it was back last night so that’s why I didn’t post on Friday.

This week’s question is….

Who is your favorite book character? I’ll give you a maximum of two choices, but they have to be from different genres!

Oh that’s a difficult one! I always liked Luna in the Harry Potter series. She’s obviously clever, and stramge, wonderfully so. I love that she doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks of her.

Bloggiesta Summery Post

It’s getting late here so time for my bloggiesta to end 😦

I’ve actually really enjoyed it despite some of my task being boring, and being driven crazy trying to find a new banner (which I still haven’t really succeeded in). I’ve loved visiting other blogs and hanging out on twitter, and feel like I’ve got a lot done.

Today I feel I have done less but maybe that’s because I have had larger tasks on my list.

Today I have:

  • Changed my header about 3 time and still not managed to find 1 I really like!
  • Cross posted review to Amazon as far back as June last year
  • Made sure all my reviews for this year have been posted to goodreads and tagged as being read this year
  • Commented on some blogs

Bloggiesta Update 1

So today (oops I mean yesterday) has been pretty productive I think. I’ve got lots of little jobs done on the blog, but that leaves quite a few big tasks for tomorrow!

So what have I done today?

  • Updated my review masterlists and added films
  • Created a Facebook page (as part of a mini challenge)
  • Updated my review policy
  • Attempted (and failed) to find out where my cover image came from (this took much longer than I expected!) and changed to a temporary cover image I know I’m allowed to use
  • Backed up my blog (as part of a mini challenge)
  • Visited a few other participating blogs
  • Taken part in my first twitter party!
  • Updated my blogroll
  • Added a challenge category and listed posts under it
  • Written and posted a post for The Haruki Murakami challenge

Considering how long that header task took it is certainly time for bed now! Goodnight all

Bloggiesta Starting Line

I’m a little ate kicking things off but have decided to take part in Bloggiesta this weekend. Bloggiesta is hosted by Suey @ It’s All About Books and The1stDaughter @ There’s a Book. Bloggiesta is designed as a weekend for bloggers to work on their blogs and get everything done which they had been putting off. Head over to It’s All About Books to sign up and find out more.

What I intend to work on: (this list will be updated as I go along)

  • Update reviews masterlists & add links to reviews of the films
  • Check and update links to other blogs
  • Try and cut down my feeder reading pile
  • Look into/set up Facebook page
  • Add internal letter links to masterlists (if anyone can help me with this one it would be appreciated, not even sure how to do it!) (not possible of wordpress.com apparently, ah well once I have saved enough to self-host)
  • Update review policy
  • Try and find out where I originally got my header from and link to original picture Couldn’t find it *sob*
  • Take part in at least  3 challenges (1,2,3)
  • Transfer reviews to Amazon and Goodreads
  • Write review of The Psychology of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
  • Write musing about review requests
  • Write musing about changing book names
  • Back-up blog
  • Write post for Murakami Challenge
  • Add challenges category to challenge posts

Hippity do dah hoppity day

At last it is Friday. It has been a week and a half. I wasn’t going to participate in The Book Blogger Hop today, I thought it’s about time I took a week off, but I popped in to see the question and couldn’t quite resist bragging! So what is this week’s question?

“Highlight one book you have received this week (for review, from the library, purchased at the store, etc.) that you can’t wait to dig into!”

Earlier this week (just as I was writing my blog post on The Man Booker Prize nominees) I won a copy of one of the books Half Blood Blues- Esi Edugyan on Twitter, and today it arrived.

Half Blood Blues is the story of two band mates. 50 years after one band mate (a black German) is arrested after the 1940 fall of Paris his friend returns to Berlin and the story of the night comes to light.

This sounds like a bit of a different angle on a war story and I’m excited to get going with it.

BOING BOING BOING

It’s Friday that means it’s blog hop time.

This weeks question is What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

I don’t really have a genre I would want to be able to read but don’t, I read most genres and every genre I want to. I don’t feel I’m missing out.

If you’re visiting from the hop hia! This week I’m holding a Harry Potter week here on Lucybird’s Book Blog. I hope you’ll have a look through the various posts I’ve made, and feel free to enter my big giveaway.

Blog Hop

This weeks blog hop is a little different, instead of answering a question we get to promote a giveaway…for another blog.

I want to highlight Dizzy C’s Little Book Blog’s giveaway. She’s giving away a signed copy of Emotional Geology by Linda Gillard. This is fantastic book and is now out of print, so if you’re a fan of ‘real’ books this could be your only chane to get your hands on a copy. It’s an international giveaway so no restictions.

Over on her blog Dizzy C also has an interview with Linda Gillard and her own review of Emoional Geology so you should look those up too.

I’ve already read Emotional Geology (my review), as well as two other books by Linda Gillard (Star Gazing, A Lifetime Burning) and she’s a bit of a favourite of mine. I don’t own either Emotional Geology or Star Gazing though so I’ve entered in hope of having my own copy.

Happy blog hop weekend everyone.

Hoppity Hoppity

I am feeling lazy this week so I am just going to answer the question

“How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile?”

I’m not to bad, I have about 22 currently, if you don’t count the books of my Mum’s I am hoping to borrow. I know some people count their wishlists as part of their TBR pile but I don’t as there’s no guarentee I’ll even read them. I’m actually trying to cut my TBR pile down, this blog has meant that I’ve increased the size of my TBR pile by over 700% so I am trying to get it to a more rational amount. I’m aiming for below ten but that hasn’t happened for more than a year.

Book Blogger Hop

My book blogger hop post is a little late this week, I signed up on my i-pod yesterday but it would be a nightmare to write my post from there so it had to wait until now.

This week Jenifer was busy so the hop is being hosted by Lori’s Book Corner.

The question this week is Which author would you most like to meet?

My answer is pretty predictable, J.K Rowling, I’d have a million questions to ask her. I think Stephen Fry would be cool to meet too.

Out the Comfort Zone Hop (9-12 June)

The Out of the Comfort Zone Hopis a new blog hop hosted here at Lucybird’s Book Blog which is designed to help you to look at books outside your comfort zone and to get you to look at blogs you wouldn’t normally look at.

So what do you need to know, I’m starting off simple, just 1 rule

When you add your link you must visit the two blogs above you, no matter who they are! You can visit other blogs too but should find you are looked at by the two blogs below you

-If you are in the top 2 this is a bit more difficult, just come back at a convenient time and start counting up with the list carrying on at the bottom (i.e. if you are at the top you visit the bottom 2 blogs, if you are second you visit the top and bottom blogs)

The jump will last from Thursday night to Sunday night (GMT). So this week will be from 2nd-5th June

Please post about this hop in your blog if you join in, I won’t ask for it every week but just well we’re getting started. Sorry about the clicky, wordpress doesn’t support the normal list

It’s Friiiiiiiday!

…and of course that means blog hop day!

This week Jennifer asks

“What book-to-movie adaption have you most liked?  Which have you disliked?”
I recently saw the adaptation of  Water for Elephants (film review, book review) and although not as good as the book I did enjoy it. My favourite book to film adaptation, though, has to be Lord of the Rings. I loved the films but have never managed to finish the books (despite loving The Hobbit). As for worst, The Harry Potter films (reviews of film and book 7) simply because I love the books so much that I hate everything that is changed and when things are left out.

Book Blogger Hop

It’s Friday and of course that means it’s time for The Book Blogger Hop. I haven’t done a post for this for a while and I thought it was about time.

This week Jennifer asks: “If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?”

Well that’s easy, first place that came to mind was Hogwarts (from Harry Potter of course). I mean just how cool would that be? I could learn magic, awesome!

New on the blog this week:

Review: The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty

News and Musings: Ebook sales outstrip paperbooks

Out the Comfort Zone Hop (19-22nd May)

You may have noticed that there was no hope last week. There were two reasons for this

1) I forgot (sorry!)
2) I’ve been having problems with the linky list which kind of makes a hop impossible.

I apologise if you haven’t been able to add your link the last couple of weeks, it was only at the last hop I realised there was a problem. I’m using a different company for my linky list this week so *fingers crossed* it should be ok
