Bouncy Bouncy!

It’s time to go hopping again! The Blog hop is a fantastic weekly event hosted by Jennifer over at crazy-for-books.com it helps bloggers to find each other- creating some great Karma. I’ve found some of my favourite blogs through the blog hop, and some book recommendations that I may never have discovered otherwise. If you’re visiting from the hop HIA! Feel free to have a look around. I love comments so comment on anything. I’ll make sure I visit you in return. 🙂

On to this weeks question…

“When you read a book that you just can’t get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?”

I don’t let myself give up before 100 pages usually. If I can’t get into a book or am not enjoying it I still want to give it a decent chance and I think that 100 pages is adequate to do that. Sometimes I stop reading books before that, but when I’m not in the right mood and intend to read them at another time. I do review books I give up on but always make sure to note that I didn’t finish the book.

New this week:

Review: The 19th Wife

  1. I absolutely hate having to give up on a book 😦 So I also try to read at least 100 pages. But if it’s painful to keep reading after 50, I sometimes stop then instead.

Hope you have a great weekend 🙂

  2. I seem to be in the minority. I rarely give up on the book. I power through until the end, usually thinking, if I just read a little further, it’ll get better.

  3. 100 pages is pretty generous. Sometimes I go as low as 50. I have so many other books to read, so if it hasn’t gotten my attention I put it down and move on to the next 🙂

    Hop on by! 😀

  4. It’s good to have a goal like that 🙂 I slog on – sometimes I’m glad I did, like with Captain Corelli’s Mandolin which didn’t pick up and get REALLY interesting until about 200 pages in, but other times I struggle through the entire book – it’s probably the only time I write rather snarky reviews! But I do aim to always finish a book, and sometimes that gets me down.

I was the same with Captain Correlli’s Mandolin- The first chapter was hard going and I almost gave up, but the second chapter got me interested enough to persevere, and it’s become a favourite of mine.

One I almost persevered with was The Hunchback of NotreDame. I was ready to give up by 50 pages but kept going, and by 100 was intrigued enough to find out what happened next, but when I turned the page it didn’t tell me…it went off in a rant about how awful the cathedral was (which is the sort of thing which had put me off to start with). I got so annoyed I threw the book across the room, something I have only ever done once before!

  6. I’ve only given up on one book since I started my book blog, and I made sure to note that it was a DNF. I really don’t like to do that, though; I prefer to finish so that I can give the book a fair and honest review.

Thanks for hopping by! 100 pages seems to be a pretty common number of pages before giving up on a book. I think maybe I need to start doing that, too!

I read your 19th Wife review, and it has made me rethink reading it. I had it on my TBR read pile, but you are the 3rd person to see it that way!

    Kim,

I read some not so positive reviews of The 19th Wife too. It meant that I wasn’t so sure of it, but it had been on my wishlist for so long that I wasn’t quite prepared for it. I’m not sure if I would have spent money on a new copy considering the reviews but I was given this one second hand from a friend so it didn’t seem like a waste of money.

  9. Mood really is everything when reading. I will put books down even if they seem great if I’m not in the mood for that genre!

  10. Happy Follow Friday!!! Hope you will stop by my blog too! My publisher and I are looking for a group of bloggers for a huge blog tour next year before the release of book two in my ‘A Sense of Truth’ series! We will be giving out a few more copies of The Thirteenth Chime (we can only give out so many, being open to e-books gives an upper hand) and are still open to all interviews and guest posts. We want to fill up the Amazon page with reviews and try to reach as many people as we can!!! Hope you might consider being a part of the team! Thank you either way!

    Sincerely,
